HOJO ZANMAI
a solo exhibition by Shinya Masuda
Opening 3PM Saturday 24 May 2025
to be opened by IZ SULAINI (KOLMEGLU)
The Drawing Room, in collaboration with Artemis Art, is pleased to present HOJO ZANMAI, a solo exhibition by Japanese artist Shinya Masuda, taking place from 24 May to 8 June 2025. Opening the exhibition will be Iz Sulaini of KOLMEGLU, at an opening reception scheduled for 3PM on Saturday, 24 May 2025.
HOJO ZANMAI will feature twelve works from the award-winning photomontage series that was recently selected as one of shortlists in the Sony World Photography Awards 2025, in both the Still Life and Japan Professional categories. This exhibition in Kuala Lumpur marks the first time that this series is being shown after the awards exhibition held at London’s Somerset House earlier this year.
This marks Artemis Art’s third collaboration with Shinya Masuda after his first solo exhibition Katsuko (2016), and the virtual exhibition The Hanafuda Shuzuoko Collection (2020). HOJO ZANMAI is a visual exploration of the transcendental ability to perceive and comprehend the unseen. Called Kanjizairyoku (観自在力), it is not merely an extension of sensory recognition but a way of grasping the intrinsic nature of existence beyond outward appearances.
Shinya Masuda’s body of work resonates across a broad multidisciplinary spectrum: Buddhist philosophies, Kant’s epistemology, Einstein’s theory of relativity, and even principles of quantum mechanics. This resonance, spanning across multifarious and disparate disciplines, suggests that reality is not something absolute, but is strongly contingent on human perception.
For this exhibition, limited edition prints of the twelve works will be made available for purchase. In addition, a limited edition HOJO ZANMAI photobook, signed and numbered by the artist, will also be available at the exhibition, which, after the opening reception, runs until 8 June 2025.
The Drawing Room is located on the 3rd Floor, Yap Ah Shak House, 17 Jalan Yap Ah Shak, 50300 Kuala Lumpur, and opens daily from 10AM to 8PM,
