Artist Statement
The concept of the impermanence of all things (諸行無常) was instilled in Shinya Masuda by his grandmother during his childhood. This early awareness of transience awakened in him a deep sensitivity to the beauty found in decay and organic transformation—phenomena he would later understand as expressions of the universe’s fundamental laws. His work continues to evolve as a meditation on the connection between the visible world and the unseen spiritual dimension, inviting reflection on the forces that lie beneath the surface of material existence.
Artist Profile
Shinya Masuda was born in 1965 in Nagoya City, Japan. Currently based in Tokyo, he was originally trained as a French cuisine chef and later transitioned into photography. After graduating from Nagano Art and Design School with a major in Visual Communication Design, Masuda worked as a commercial photographer in the photography department of a design production company. He then met HASHI, a New York-based photographer known for his pioneering work in Action Still Life, and studied under him for a year and a half at HASHI STUDIO TOKYO.
Masuda currently works as an independent artist, specializing in conceptual photography informed by his original concept of Visual Metaphysics—an approach that integrates photography with philosophical, scientific, and Buddhist perspectives to give form to the unseen dimensions of existence. His work forms a contemplative bridge between the seen and the unseen, exploring how invisible principles shape the visible world.
His work has been widely acclaimed for its elegant formal beauty and free-spirited conceptual depth in countries such as the United States, Germany, Italy, Malaysia, and Israel, as well as in cities like London, Paris, and Athens. He has held a number of solo exhibitions in the United States, and his work has been extensively featured in European art magazines and international art projects, particularly in Italy and other parts of Europe.
What Is Visual Metaphysics?
Visual Metaphysics is a conceptual framework that explores metaphysical questions through the medium of visual art. Traditionally, metaphysics is a branch of philosophy that contemplates invisible realities and fundamental aspects of existence, typically through logic and language. In contrast, Visual Metaphysics seeks to immerse itself in non-physical dimensions through visual expression—translating conceptual insights and intuitive discoveries into tangible, aesthetic forms. It is a practice of seeing beyond appearance, of revealing what lies beneath the surface of the world.

アーティストステイトメント
諸行無常という概念は、増田伸也が幼少期に祖母から教えられたものでした。この「すべては移ろう」という認識は、彼の心に深い感受性を芽生えさせ、やがて彼は朽ちゆくものや有機的な変化の中に美を見出すようになります。それらは後に、宇宙の根源的な法則のあらわれであることに気づくようになりました。
彼の作品は、目に見える世界と目に見えない霊的次元とのつながりについての瞑想として展開し続けています。そしてそれは、物質的な存在の表層の奥に潜む力について、静かな省察を促すものとなっています。
アーティスト・プロフィール
増田伸也は1965年、愛知県名古屋市に生まれました。現在は東京を拠点に活動しています。かつてはフランス料理の料理人として修業を積んだのち、写真の道へと転向しました。長野美術専門学校にてビジュアル・コミュニケーション・デザインを専攻し卒業後、デザイン制作会社の写真部門でコマーシャルフォトグラファーとして勤務しました。
その後、Action Still Life（動的静物写真）の先駆者でありニューヨークを拠点とする写真家・HASHIと出会い、東京のHASHI STUDIOで1年半にわたって師事します。
現在は独立したアーティストとして活動しており、独自に提唱する「視覚的形而上学（Visual Metaphysics）」という概念を軸に、哲学・科学・仏教の視点を取り入れながら、写真を通して不可視の次元にかたちを与える作品を制作しています。彼の作品は、目に見える世界と目に見えない世界のあいだに、深い思索を促す架け橋を築く試みでもあります。
その優美な形式美と自由な発想に満ちたコンセプトは、アメリカ、ドイツ、イタリア、マレーシア、イスラエル、そしてロンドン、パリ、アテネといった都市でも高く評価されてきました。アメリカでは複数回にわたって個展を開催し、特にイタリアをはじめとするヨーロッパ各国のアート雑誌や国際的なアートプロジェクトでも作品がたびたび紹介されています。
視覚的形而上学（Visual Metaphysics）とは？
視覚的形而上学とは、視覚芸術を通して形而上学的な問いにアプローチする概念的枠組みです。伝統的な形而上学は、存在の根本や目に見えない実在について、主に論理や言語を用いて探求してきました。
これに対して視覚的形而上学は、非物質的な次元に視覚的な表現を通して没入し、概念的な洞察や直感的な発見を、美的で具体的なかたちに翻訳していく試みです。それは、表面的な見た目の奥にあるものを見ようとする実践であり、この世界の背後に潜むものをあらわにする行為でもあります。
