Gente di Fotografia: Quarterly journal of photographic culture

Gente di Fotografia is a quarterly journal focusing on contemporary photographic art in all of its forms. What has kept us going on for almost twenty years is the conviction that photography is an essential part of the media and cultural world.

We are interested in what photography has to say and especially in the way it says it; in other words, in the way the same means of expression is used by different photographers. Their look contributes to form a sort of “visual public opinion” that unconsciously influences the way we look at the world and at its image. Over the years, our journal has discovered many new talents and rediscovered forgotten artists. This passionate and rigorous work has been possible thanks to our editorial staff and to the essential contribution of the many people who have collaborated with us, enriching Gente di Fotografia’s pages. They are very different in background, training and sensibility but all agree on the importance of taking photography seriously, questioning its language and, if necessary, exposing its weaknesses and its commercial or “glamour” shortcuts. Taking photography seriously also means reflecting on its formal and aesthetic status, on its current role and, where possible, predicting its future in a historical moment of great confusion when it is difficult to single out and map long-term tendencies. In this context, we publish an original and critically alert journal which cares about the quality of images, but also aims at arousing discussion and exchanging views with its readers. A journal which offers sheer visual and tactile pleasure but is also a source of knowledge.
